1) Cicada 3301

On January 4th, 2012 the most difficult puzzle on the internet called "Cicada 3301" was born. It is considered to be the "most elaborate and mysterious puzzle of the Internet age".

Cicada 3301 is a nickname for an enigmatic organization that published a series of puzzles three times to recruit code breakers from the public.

 

This puzzle was originally published on sites like Reddit and 4chan. The first internet puzzle started on 4chan on January 4th, 2012 and lasted almost a month. A year later, on January 4, 2013, a second round began and then a third round. After confirming a new clue posted on Twitter on January 4, 2014, the third puzzle remains to be solved: the puzzles mainly focused on data security, cryptography, steganography and internet anonymity.

 

Many have speculated that the puzzles are a recruiting tool for the NSA, CIA, MI6, a "Masonic conspiracy" or a group of cyber mercenaries. Others have claimed that Cicada 3301 is an alternate reality game. However, no company or individual has tried to monetize it. 

Dark Web: Cicada 3301, an organization-inspired film, was released in 2021.

 

2) Sad Satan: The Horror Game

Nearly 6 years ago, on June 15, 2015, a rather strange horror game debuted on a YouTube gaming channel named "Obscure Horror Corner".
The name of the game was "Sad Satan" built with game engine known as "Terror Engine". The origin of this game remained mystery back when it was first premiered, until the present time.

In this dark themed game, players spend most of their time walking down a series of hallways in a dark disheartening maze with purposefully blurred field of vison and usually his or her footsteps make up the soundtrack.
According to an interview with the owner of the channel by Kotaku, a gaming blog from 2004, the game is said to have been downloaded via Tor hidden service following the suggestion of an anonymous subscriber, who in turn claimed to have found the link via deep web through a user called “ZK”. 

Obscure Horror Corner first reported stumbling across a file called “sadsatan.exe” on the Deep Web and downloaded it. It turned out to be something very strange: A weird, semi-abstract horror game made up of black and white visuals, obscure ghost children, and a soundtrack of famous serial killers like John Wayne Gacy and Charles Manson.

Later a new version of the game was posted to 4chan by someone claiming to be ZK, claiming that Obscure Horror Corner had not been showing their viewers the "true" Sad Satan. Members of the 4chan community downloaded this version of the game and attempted to play it. Most users complained that their computers began running sluggishly, and a few of them even reported that their computers became completely unresponsive while trying to run the game. A few users even reported that their computers would not turn on anymore after running this version of the game.

The few who succeeds claimed to have seen highly disturbing imagery.

This version of the game, dubbed as the "clone" by most of the /r/sadsatan community, contained images of violent gore and child killing and such.

Sad Satan was the last game covered by Obscure Horror Corner, and since then, the YouTube channel has been ditched for reasons unknown !

 

There has been speculation that the game was in fact created by the owner of Obscure Horror Corner in an effort to increase viewer subscription count, It is also possible that Sad Satan was not created by the owner of Obscure Horror Corner, and that in truth, the owner of the channel decided to go into hiding because of all the controversy after the malware version of Sad Satan was released. 

3) Publius Enigma

Publius Enigma is an internet phenomenon and unsolved problem that began with cryptic messages posted by a user who only identified himself as "Publius" on the unmoderated Usenet newsgroup. The messenger suggested a riddle regarding the 1994 Pink Floyd's album "The Division Bell" and promised that the answer would result in a reward.On 11 June 1994, a user of the anonymous Penet remailer service posted messages to the Usenet newsgroup, music.pink-floyd. 

The message written by the user was,
"For the ingenious person (or group of persons) who solves the riddles who recognizes this - and where this information points to - a unique prize has been secreted."
In order to refute the resulting skepticism, Publius agreed to provide evidence of authenticity.
On the night of July 18, 1994, the light patterns before the Pink Floyd concert in East Rutherford briefly spelled the words "ENIGMA PUBLIUS".
 
It is unclear whether the puzzle was a truly solvable puzzle as part of an early internet-based competition or whether it was a complicated joke !
